The University of Calgary is seeking new members to join its Senate. Connecting UCalgary to the community, Senators serve as ambassadors of the university, sharing its accomplishments and raising the profile of the institution.

Every year, UCalgary seeks new senators to help share the university’s story of education, research and innovation. There are currently eight senate positions available, with the new Senators beginning their three-year terms on July 1, 2022.

“The Senate plays a pivotal role in our university community, connecting UCalgary with our many stakeholders,” says UCalgary Chancellor Deborah Yedlin, who is also chair of the Senate. “Elected members of Senate bring important perspectives and experience that support the Senate's mission to be a visible advocate for UCalgary throughout the Calgary community.”

In addition to representing the university within their networks, Senators fulfil a range of important roles. This includes recruiting and selecting the chancellor — a process currently underway with Yedlin soon to end her term — engaging in student mentorship, and presenting events such as the annual Lecture of a Lifetime.

Paula Bernat, UCalgary Senator and chair of the Senator Development committee, says being a member is great way to give back to the community.

“The university is a vital part of our city and being a Senator gives me a meaningful way to engage with the university community,” says Bernat. “We’re working towards an exciting new chapter in post-secondary education that’s accessible and community-focused and it’s amazing to be part of that.”

The Senate is chaired by the chancellor and is made up of 62 members, including 30 elected members from the community. If you know someone who would make a great Senator, encourage them to apply now.
