First in-person convocation celebrated since pandemic hit in 2019

655 grads attend ceremonies, 1,941 degrees and or designations awarded

Don’t let the masks fool you. While it might not look exactly the same as pre-COVID convocation celebrations, the smiles were wide behind the masks as hundreds of graduates gathered in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

Like the spring Class of 2021 cohort and the Class of 2020, this graduating class bridges the before and after of COVID. They persevered through at least part of their studies in parallel with a global pandemic that we continue to navigate. In keeping with evolving safety protocols, while the graduates were with each other in person for the celebration, thousands of family, friends and supporters joined via livestream.

The day was split into morning and afternoon ceremonies and included greetings from Chancellor Deborah Yedlin and President Ed McCauley, along with ceremonial traditions such as the University of Calgary Honour Song that make convocation special. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as honorary degrees and the Order of the University of Calgary were all awarded.

Watch the livestream for both the morning and afternoon ceremonies and get a glimpse of the celebration in our photo gallery below.
