From the University Calendar, G.A.3

A student who is registered in a graduate degree program at another university that does not have an exchange agreement with the University of Calgary, and who wishes to engage in research at the graduate level at the University of Calgary for credit at their home university, may be admitted as a visiting graduate student.

  • Visiting graduate students are normally permitted to spend a maximum of one year at UCalgary.

It is strongly recommended that VSRs start the application for admission process at least 4 months in advance of when they hope to travel to Canada.

Application process

To apply as a Visiting Student Researcher, you must secure a faculty supervisor for the duration of your visit. Start by exploring our programs and available supervisors. Once you connect with a supervisor, obtain a confirmation of interest letter to include in your application. After your placement is confirmed, you should also contact the graduate program you will be visiting to ensure they are aware of your upcoming application and can support any program-specific requirements.
