The fall 2020 mixed-delivery method was announced in May. While preparing for your classes, you’ve probably had to incorporate online learning into your studies. As you'd expect, fall 2020 is going to be a little different. Instead of navigating large lecture halls and crowded hallways, you’ll now need to learn how to navigate the virtual classroom. Although some instructors are preparing online classroom guidelines, you’ll still have to figure out how to keep up with your studies, conduct yourself in Zoom classes, and find community on a campus that’s gone mostly digital.

This three-part series will share tips and resources to help you succeed in your online studies.

Staying connected with your peers and friends

Your classes might be a mix of synchronous (live) or asynchronous (pre-recorded) lectures. UCalgary has provided students with access to Zoom for classes and meetings through D2L. Check out this handy Zoom guide from the Taylor Institute.

To help you stay engaged and focused in your online classroom, we recommend keeping your video on. If it feels like you're in a regular class, you’ll be more motivated to complete the course requirements. Also, don’t be shy about speaking up during an online class.

Keep in mind that not having to commute to campus is a bonus, but online classes can reduce your chances of connecting with others on campus. If you’re looking to socialize, here are a few options to consider:

  • creating a weekly check-in with your friends and classmates
  • join an SU club to connect with others who share your interests
  • Student Wellness Services offers weekly workshops (like mindfulness meditation) to help you with your mental health strategy.
  • sign up for one of the many events Leadership and Student Engagement host to help students unwind

Finding time and space to socialize — even if it takes place online — will help you find balance during the school year.
