Areas of Research
My research interests are in the areas of drinking water treatment, analytical chemistry and toxicology. I am interested in the identification and formation mechanisms of unregulated disinfection by-products using advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation and techniques. Also, I am interested on the transformation products and toxicity of emerging contaminants of concern derived from advanced treatments (i.e., oxidation and membrane-based technologies) developed to remove contaminants from municipal wastewater effluents for water reuse.
Supervising degrees
Working with this supervisor
I am looking for enthusiastic graduate students interested in improving the safety of drinking water by characterizing the formation of contaminants and by-products formed during water treatment processes. I am looking for a student with strong analytical skills (math) and background in either 1) chemistry or 2) biochemistry and/or toxicology. Prospective students must have a strong academic background in chemistry to be considered. International students must meet the Department of Chemistry's English requirements (IELTS minimum of 7.0 on all sections or TOEFL 580 paper-based or 97 internet-based). If interested please send your curriculum vitae, transcripts, a statement of research interests (1 page) and contact information for three references to s.kimurahara@ucalgary.ca. Postdoctoral researchers eligible for external funding are welcome to contact me for opportunities.
