Areas of Research

Religious, social, and intellectual history of the pre-modern Arabic and Persian speaking Muslim Middle East
My research expertise is in the field of the religious, social, and intellectual history of the pre-modern Arabic- and Persian-speaking Muslim Middle East. Broadly speaking, I am interested in the interrelations between religion, culture, and society. I also study the production and circulation of texts, examining what they tell us about their authors and readers. Finally, I am interested in the history of the discipline of Religious Studies in general, and Islamic Studies in particular, as practiced in Euro-American academia in the last two centuries.

I am looking for a student who is interested in the religious, social, or intellectual history of the Muslim Middle East. A reading ability of Arabic, Persian, or Turkish would a great plus. I can supervise MA theses on Islam, sectarianism, intellectual trends in the Muslim world, and the connections between religion, political ideology, and culture in the Muslim world.
