Areas of Research
Our lab focuses on the genetics of epilepsy with a particular interest in the identification of somatic variants associated with epilepsy. Somatic variants occur during development and can only be identified in the tissue of interest (i.e. brain). Our lab is working on the development of innovative techniques to harvest such cells for example using stereo EEG. We are also interested in multiplex families with epilepsy as well as adult and pediatric patients with epileptic encephalopathies. A backbone of our research is detailed phenotyping i.e. the detailed clinical characterization of each participating patient, which is followed by gene identification using next generation sequencing technology.
The lab has strong interest in precision medicine not only in patients with monogenic causes of epilepsy but also in patients with complex inheritance. Dr. Klein coordinates an international consortium (RAISE-GENIC, funded by the ERA PerMed Cofound) which aims to develop tools that help physicians to select the anti-seizure drug with the best chance of success. This collaborative effort involves additional PIs at the University of Calgary (Dr. Colin Josephson) and three European countries (Germany, Finland, Belgium) and uses big data strategies to integrate clinical data, raw EEG and raw MRI data as well as exome sequencing data.
