John Yackel, Ph.D.
Ph.D. in Sea Ice Science, Remote Sensing and Climatology Center for Earth Observation Science University of Manitoba
Areas of Research
Snow is paramount in atmosphere-sea ice growth and melt processes but is poorly measured on large spatial scales owing to logistical difficulties, including harsh weather and darkness during the important growth period. My research group and I specialize in the use of multifrequency microwave remote sensing techniques and technologies from surface-based and satellite based platforms for measuring, modelling and validating empirically derived measurements of snow thickness and snow water equivalent on first-year sea ice types
