Areas of Research

New approaches to imaging and sensing
The general objective of my research program is to create flexible sensing and imaging systems that integrate multiple, low-cost sensing technologies to provide sensitive and specific detection of targets. My team has developed significant expertise in medical microwave imaging, specifically with the Tissue Sensing Adaptive Radar (TSAR) system for breast imaging.
Prototype systems
The work of my research team is characterized by a focus on practical implementation. In other words, innovations are required to work not just in theory but also in practice. The major accomplishments of my research group include implementation and testing of prototype systems for medical microwave imaging. This involves development of custom sensors to collect data, the patient interface, and the systems required to reliably and repeatably scan tissues of interest.
Imaging and sensing algorithms
My team has developed algorithms to form images that indicate the presence and location of anomalies. This includes preprocessing algorithms to enhance components of the signals, as well as different approaches to image formation. We are also continuously developing and enhancing algorithms, integrating data from a variety of modalities to improve accuracy and resolution.
Applications
We have tested prototype systems on volunteers, demonstrating the potential of microwave imaging for breast health assessment. We are applying our sensors, algorithms and prototypes to new biomedical and industrial applications. For example, we are exploring the potential of our approaches for cardiac output and hydration monitoring.
