Areas of Research

Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides a non-invasive method to examine the brain; including its tissue characteristics, white matter connections, functional activation, and functional connectivity. Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) is a complementary method to examine neurochemistry. Of particular interest is the neurometabolite GABA, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. While GABA is present in the 1H-MRS spectrum, its resolution requires specialized methods. I work on the development of GABA-MRS as well as MRS and MRI applications to understand brain physiology and pathophysiology. In the past I have examined Autism spectrum disorder, complex motor stereotypies, stroke and am currently interested in healthy development and aging, traumatic brain injury, neurodegeneration, cerebral palsy, pain and migraine.

Working with this supervisor

I am looking for students who are interested in applying imaging to understand the healthy brain and clinical conditions. I am also looking for candidates with technical backgrounds (e.g., engineering) who are interested in the development of MRS methods. This candidate would likely enroll in a Biomedical Engineering graduate program.
