Community representatives assist in making student non-academic misconduct decisions
Travis Dickie, Student and Enrolment Services
Continuing the University of Calgary’s commitment to ensuring that campuses are safe, welcoming and inclusive environments, Sarah Newcombe, the university’s new student conduct specialist, is seeking students and faculty members with an interest in serving on the Student Non-Academic Misconduct Hearing Board. Faculty members are also invited to apply to become specially trained members of the Hearing Board which will hear student cases under the new Sexual Violence Policy.
These hearing boards fall under the processes related to the Student Non-Academic Misconduct Policy, which communicates the university’s expectations with regard to student behaviour, and addresses complaints of non-academic misconduct.
"Hearing boards serve an important function when determining the appropriate outcome in student conduct cases. Each case is unique, and can benefit from the expertise and insight of a board in order to be given due process,” said Jennifer Quin, senior director of Student Services.
Newcombe is a member of the Alberta Bar and comes to the University of Calgary after having practised primarily in the areas of criminal, family, and mental health law following her completion of a dual law degree at McGill University.
If you are interested in applying or re-applying to serve on a hearing board for a one-year term, or would like more information, please fill out an application on the Student Conduct Office’s website, or contact Newcombe at conduct@ucalgary.ca or 403-210-3868.
