Campus during COVID-19 captured in photos

Atypical images show a barren main campus as studies and work remain online

Advancement photographer Riley Brandt got special permission to visit main campus at the University of Calgary to document a very different landscape than most of us are used to seeing. "At times it was eerie when I was walking down a dim, empty hallway,” he says. “The only sign of life in the MacKimmie Tower was a wet floor left by someone in the caretaking department" who had cleaned it.

Since mid-March, the University of Calgary’s campuses have been relatively quiet as we focused on our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, pivoting to remote learning and working, while a significant number of researchers carried on their work on campus in critical areas. Brandt reports that construction on the MacKimmie Block is still active, and security, caretaking and facilities staff were on campus. A reminder that only those who are approved or required to be on campus, should be on campus in person, as the university begins its phased re-entry.
