Leadership includes leaders in schools, the higher education sector, business and not-for-profit sectors, and health industries. Drs. Shelleyann and Donald E. Scott established the International Study of Leadership Development in Higher Education (ISLDHE - www.ucalgary.ca/ISLDHE) which encompasses research partners in over 12 countries including Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, New Zealand, European Union, Eastern Europe, Portugal, Spain, Puerto Rico, Turkey, Ukraine, and United Arab Emirates. This scholarly collective is exploring the availability and effectiveness of leadership preparation and development programs and experiences focusing on varied levels of leadership in higher education, for example, Associate Deans, Department Heads/Chairs, Deans, Provosts/ProVice Chancellors/Presidents. Shelleyann is also a long time member of the International Study of Principal Preparation (ISPP - www.ucalgary.ca/ISPP) - an established international scholarly collective spanning 15 countries, aimed at exploring the effectiveness of principals’ leadership development across different cultural contexts.
Dr Scott's research in this areas spans schools, the higher education sector, business and the not-for-profit sectors, as well as health industries. This involves exploring how and why individuals engage in professional development and the impacts and effectiveness of their professional, academic, or leadership development. Her research also includes examining the importance of building the capacity of knowledge workers in contemporary organizations. Additionally, research in this area focuses on the promoters and constraints that either support or impede the effectiveness of individual efforts, as well as organizational effectiveness.
Educational assessment encompasses the trends and issues in student assessment in all its forms. Dr Scott was one of the tri-university team who undertook the Alberta Student Assessment Study ASAS) and explored assessment purposes, practices, and professional development needed for enhanced assessment in schools across the province.
