Areas of Research

Learning Sciences, STEM Pedagogy, Mathematics Education
Dr. Miwa Aoki Takeuchi's research projects are deeply rooted in community-based actions of hope. Working collaboratively with learners, teachers, community activists, and "families", I aim to co-design the learning environments that can leverage learners' embodied and emplaced disciplinary experiences into transdisciplinary imaginations toward social and environmental justice. Through these collaborative efforts, we together reframe what mathematics and STEM learning could be like. To challenge the deficit perspectives imposed on historically marginalized learners, my research team and I employ and mobilize various research tools and the public communication medium, including arts, to care-fully listen to these learners' silenced voices to shine light on subjugated and hidden ways of knowing in the colonial knowledge production. Toward transdisciplinary visions, I value and deeply appreciate my collaboration with student colleagues, community partners, and academic partners with diverse disciplinary expertise toward our shared visions for social, food, and environmental justice. Dr. Takeuchi is currently on the Board of Directors at the International Society of the Learning Sciences, was a Co-Chair of the Equity and Justice Committee at the International Society of the Learning Sciences, and was a Co-President of the Network of the Learning Sciences in Canada (2021-24). Miwa believes in fostering dynamic and porous communities that learn together toward equity and justices. I look forward to working with my student colleagues who believe in our collective visions of community-rooted, collaborative actions of hope that centers socio-environmental justices.
