Biography

I specialize in Nietzsche and 19th-century philosophy, as well as Peirce and pragmatism, with additional interests in ethical theory, philosophy of law, ancient philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of history. My academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Yale University, with research experience at Freie Universität Berlin, prior to my joining the University of Calgary in 1997.

My current projects include “Ethics and the Life of the Mind: A Study of Nietzsche's Moral Theory” and “Finding Friedrich Nietzsche” (a philosophical study of his early years, 1865-1870). I have received several awards, including a Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Calgary Student Union and a Visiting Fellowship at the Centre for Ethics at the University of Toronto. As the President of the Apeiron Society for the Practice of Philosophy, you can often find me at Aperion events.
