Part 4: Scholarship History

General Information:

Review the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Doctoral Program website for Eligibility.

Full CGS-D applications are evaluated and selected on 2 criteria weighted equally:

  1. Research ability and potential
  2. Relevant experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia

By submitting a NOI students can be targeted for the following FGS supports:

  • Referee support: The Graduate Scholarship Office will connect with the student’s referees, providing details of the competition scoring criteria and supporting guides to writing a strong scholarship reference.
  • Transcripts: required for the application are requested from the Graduate Scholarship Office.
  • Communications: for workshops/cafes/drop-in sessions held by the Associate Dean scholarships and the Graduate Leadership Circle (GLC), which help to support students in creating a strong application and provides peer review.  In addition, the scholarship team can easily contact applicants should there be any short notice changes or adjustments to this competition.

Students who do not submit an NOI but are eligible for the CGS-D competition are still strongly encouraged to apply to the main competition.

Part 1: Applicant Information

  • If you are not currently registered in a doctoral degree AND your doctoral start date does NOT appear in the drop-down list:

    • Select a future start date of Fall 2023, regardless of when you actually plan to enter/transfer to the doctoral degree program. This entry has no bearing on your eligibility or registration plans.

  • Months in program are calculated from the beginning of the entering term: January, May, July, or September

  • When calculating total number of months of graduate studies include ALL time registered in graduate studies whether you received any credentials or not.

  • If you entered the doctoral program prior to Winter 2020, the system will not allow you to continue. If you believe you are eligible as per the CGS-D eligibility criteria, please email gsaward@ucalgary.ca.

Some eligibility requirements for CGS D differ from those of the agency-specific doctoral awards. Refer to the appropriate literature for CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC for further details as well as information on doctoral awards tenable at foreign institutions.

Part 2: Award Selection

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral program is offered through three federal (national government) research funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC).  Collectively these granting bodies are referred to as the Tri-Agencies. Each agency offers scholarships based on their priority area of research. Select the research agency which aligns closest to your research area.  Consult with your supervisor and/or your program if unsure. You may also email the agencies directly to enquire.

Part 3: Academic History

  • List ALL post-secondary institutions you have attended regardless of whether you received any credentials.

  • Include current/upcoming University of Calgary programs even if no grades are assigned.

  • Duplications may appear due to duplicated data entered during the admission process. Ensure you delete all duplicate entries and add any missing degree data as required.

  • Transcripts for all institutions will be compiled by the the Graduate Scholarship Office and formatted into one file as required by the application portal.

  • If final official transcripts are outstanding from your admission package or the transcripts have been updated since last submitted (degree granted, grades updated, etc) ensure the most up-to-date copies have been received by the Graduate Program Administrator and added to your student file.

  • We will email the PDF file to you by September 22, and you will have to upload it to your application by the October 1st application deadline according to the application instructions as specified by the agency.

  • It is your responsibility to ensure the transcripts attached here are correct, complete, legible once uploaded and in the correct format. Review the final version of your online application before it is submitted.

  • If you have not received your transcripts, we are unable to respond to any emails requesting updates on the status of your request prior to September 23, as this delays the overall process. If there are any concerns with your transcripts, you will be contacted.

Part 4: Scholarship History

  • Sources of funds:
    • Federal - national government funding
    • Provincial – regional/state/territorial/district/sectoral/zonal government funding
    • University – Institutional awards
    • Non-Profit – funds from a charity or research organisation to support your studies
    • Other – any funds that would not be categorised in the other areas
  • For multiyear scholarships indicate the value of the scholarship stipend received per year
  • List up to ten scholarships or awards that you have been awarded. Do not include assistantships, supervisor funding, group awards or funding paid through grants. Indicate the dates of tenure in chronological order starting from the most recent to oldest.

If the prestige of the award is not apparent, you can add a statement to the Comments section. For example, the $800 John Smith Scholarship is awarded to the top Engineering student each year.

Remember, this is a preliminary document. You will have the opportunity to list all of your awards and recognitions in the main CGS-D application.
