Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada Scholarships

Two scholarships are available: Graduate Student Award of Merit and Student Award in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion 

Preparing your application

You are encouraged to apply for awards when you have submitted your admissions application and received your University of Calgary student number (UCID). You are not required to meet the eligibility requirements in the terms of reference of an award when you apply, but if successful, you must meet the eligibility requirements at the time the award is paid.

Graduate Student Award of Merit

  • At least four awards, each in the amount of $4,000 (subject to change)

Student Award in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

  • An award, in the amount of $4,000 (subject to change) 

Eligibility

Graduate Student Award of Merit

Women graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the university or general community while maintaining exemplary academic records.

Women registered in Master's or PhD programs at any Member Institution of Universities Canada within a designated region are eligible to be nominated.

  • Outstanding academic performance.
  • Evidence of leadership, including but not limited to such things as:
    • executive positions in student organizations
    • participation on committees (student committees and university committees)
    • organization of special events, conferences, etc.
    • involvement in advocacy groups
    • involvement in volunteer organizations, within the campus setting and/or in the general community.

Student Award in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

A woman university or college student * who advances equity, diversity and inclusion within and/or outside their institution through outstanding dedication and excellence or community outreach and activism. 

Students should demonstrate an exceptional commitment to and engagement with a particular issue of social justice, community, and/or community organization.  Such community activism can take place on or off campus.

  • Strong academic performance.
  • Evidence of leadership with respect to equity, diversity and inclusion, through such activities as:
    • involvement in student organizations
    • participation on committees (student committees and university committees)
    • organization of special events, conferences, etc.
    • involvement in advocacy groups
    • involvement in volunteer organizations, within the campus setting and/or in the general community.

 

Regions are defined as follows, and eligibility shall rotate among them:  

  • Western Provinces (2024)
  • Quebec (2025) 
  • Atlantic Provinces (2026)
  • Ontario (2027) 

Application

  • Only applications submitted in electronic format will be accepted 
  • Submit one pdf to gsaward@ucalgary.ca that includes the following:
    • curriculum vitae
    • biographical data*
      • biographical information usually includes information about former and current studies,  areas of interest, research, publications, other awards, interests outside the university, and community or volunteer work.  It's usually in a narrative form, about 1-2 pages in length, and is an opportunity for the nominee to tell the adjudication committee some things about herself, and to explain at greater length her background/interests/passions/ambitions/volunteer work.”
  • Format the subject line and file name as follows: 2024_SWAAC_Merit_Applicant last name, 2024_SWAAC_EDI_Applicant last name, or 2024_SWAAC_BOTH_Applicant last name 
  • Your UCID must be included in the body of your email

Transcripts

  • Ensure that the post-secondary education section of your application is complete as we will use this information to pull your transcripts

References

  • Letter must be emailed directly from referees to gsaward@ucalgary.ca
  • Letters must be on letterhead, signed and dated
  • Referees are to format the subject line as follows: 2024_SWAAC_Applicant Last Name_REF_Referee last name

Deadline

January 1

If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, submit your application on the first business day following the deadline before 11:59:59 pm to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Award Office gsaward@ucalgary.ca.
