Areas of Research

Veterinary Education, Veterinary Careers, Veterinary Practice, Rural and Production Animal Practice, Dairy Herd Health, Cattle Medicine
I am interested in how veterinary students learn, and how they make decisions about their careers. My research focuses on identifying strategies to address veterinary workforce shortages in the rural and production animal sectors, and the role veterinary schools can play in alleviating this. I am a specialist cattle vet by training, and my primary clinical interest is in dairy herd health. I am also interested in conducting applied research to improve the health and welfare of cattle, and particularly to find methods to support vets and producers to implement evidence based approaches to improving the health and welfare of the cattle under their care. To address these research questions I use mixed methods (reviewing both quantitative and qualitative data), and have experience in questionnaire design and analysis, thematic analysis, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups, as well as quantitative techniques such as random effects regression modelling, factor analysis and cluster analysis. I have used these quantitative techniques on clinical production data from commercial farms, data collected in the field, and on questionnaire gathered data.
