Areas of Research
My research expertise is in the history of the United States of America in 19th century with a particular focus on the Civil War era, politics, and cities. In recent years I have became more interested in global comparative and transnational approaches to studying the 19th century.
I specialize in the history of the 19th century United States, and within that area I also study the history of cities. At the undergraduate level I teach a course on cities in world history. I am also a member of the Urban Studies Research Group at the University of Calgary. I am willing to supervise graduate-level urban history topics provided that I have some familiarity with the particular topic.
