Dona Schwartz, PhD
PhD in Communication with specialization in visual communication and photography The Annenberg School for Communications University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USAAreas of Research
My photographic work builds upon my background in qualitative social science research, and my experience as an ethnographer. I am interested in using photography as a way of exploring social worlds and universes of meaning. Much of my work has focused on domestic life and the family, the crucible in which our identities are formed. I am also interested in transitional moments in life--moments when we stand on the threshold of a new identity. I shoot both film and digital, and choose visual approaches that best suit the ideas I explore. I am also concerned with narrative and narrative structure, and ways in which photographs can tell stories, whether in the gallery or on the page.
