Alberta Innovates

Alberta Innovates Scholarships are designed to support high caliber students undertaking full-time graduate studies in areas of research important to Alberta.
Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures (AITF) Scholarships
The Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures (AITF) Scholarships support high caliber thesis-based students undertaking a full-time graduate program in research areas that are strategically important to Alberta.
Your research must be related to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Nano, or Omics (Omics consists of: Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Transcriptomics and Regulomics); in and of themselves, or additionally supporting the areas of Health, Bio-industries, or Energy and the Environment.
Note: This program will not support medical or health-related research initiatives that qualify for support from the Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), or similar medical research agencies. Candidates performing research that is clearly health-related must apply directly to AIHS, CIHR or similar medical research agencies.


$26,500 Master’s, up to two years
$31,500 PhD, up to four years

Application Deadlines

New students starting a graduate program in May 2017, September 2017, or January 2018, January 15 to your Graduate Program Administrator, unless the program has an earlier deadline.

Continuing students apply through the Graduate Award Competition by February 1 to your Graduate Program Administrator, unless the program has an earlier deadline.

(New students can also apply through the February competition if you missed the January 15 deadline.)


IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to ensure the application is completed in the correct file format.


The AITF NSERC top-up is only available to students who have applied for, and been awarded, both an NSERC and AITF award through the current competitions.

For the purposes of the Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures competition, a major award is defined as having a value of $17,500 or higher.



Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions (AIHS) Scholarships
The Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (AIHS) Scholarships support top-quality, internationally competitive health research. This funding supports further understanding of health and disease, and to producing results that will make a difference to the health, economy and societal wellbeing of Albertans and people around the world.
You must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at an Alberta university undertaking health-related training leading to a thesis-based graduate degree. You must have completed their first year of graduate training. The Graduate Studentship is tenable only at an Alberta university.
