Second year nursing students working with the Alzheimer Society of Calgary’s Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) have witnessed first hand the impact that spending time, making connections and creating a relationship with their clients can create. And they are hoping to make more of a difference by raising funds for the program.

According to Ali Cada, Program Manager at the Alzheimer Society, OMA is an art therapy program which “provides the opportunity for people living with dementia to build their confidence, create meaningful relationships and strengthen their self-autonomy.”

Along with art, the students and volunteers get to know the clients on a personal level through reminiscing with them about their life and offering smiles and love.

“OMA has allowed me to see the person behind the disease; they are more than just their diagnosis,” says Hayley Patten, one of the students working with OMA.

“Together, we have the opportunity to directly influence an individual’s quality of life: the impact on those with progressive brain disease - giving them a chance to socialize and make their own decisions through creating beautiful pieces of art - inspires the clients and stimulates mental wellness.”

Patten’s group wants to help expand the program and so will be holding a Christmas fundraiser, selling these handcrafted art pieces in the Nursing Foyer on Tuesday, Dec. 6 from noon - 4 p.m.

The money raised will go directly to OMA for art supplies and resources so it is possible to expand the program across Calgary and offer it to many more seniors.
