Bitumen pellets. An aquatic oil spill sponge. Converting CO2 to biomass using algae. A novel tailings treatment that results in a highly compact sediment. Testing carbon capture at a real-world field research station to provide solutions for a clean energy future. These are just some of the ways UCalgary is transforming the energy landscape — and you can hear from the researchers behind these innovations at the Global Petroleum Show (GPS), June 11-13.

UCalgary has a well-established energy research strategy that enables our scholars to take a leadership role in the development of groundbreaking energy technology and practices. “With our diversified energy research approach, we are creating new ways to unlock hydrocarbon resources with zero carbon emissions, developing new techniques for increasing the energy from renewable sources and designing new carbon capture methods,” says Dr. Andre Buret, interim vice-president (research). “Our researchers, partners from industry, government and other institutions have come together to create solutions that will affect real change.”

At GPS, UCalgary showcases our world-class innovations, scholars and programming. This year, our engagement at GPS includes daily Tech Talks from leading energy researchers in our Exhibition booth, researchers presenting at the Technical Conference, more than a dozen technical posters, and both an award nominee and Schulich School of Engineering award sponsorship at the GPS Awards.

Dr. Nader Mahinpey, PhD, professor in chemical and petroleum engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering, has been nominated for the Emerging Clean Technologies Award for his work related to greenhouse gas mitigation through environmentally sustainable chemical processes. “The Schulich School of Engineering is a catalyst for meaningful change within the energy sector, with its researchers always seeking out new innovations and developing technologies to sustainably grow the industry,” says Dr. Bill Rosehart, dean, Schulich School of Engineering. “The GPS Awards is another catalyst for our researchers to be recognized on a global energy scale.”
