2021 UCalgary Three Minute Thesis Finals

Top Performers in the 2021 UCalgary Three Minute Thesis Competition

The top two students from each heat along with the Presenter’s People’s Choice (PPC), as voted on by the participants, will move on to the finals. If the PPC is a heat winner that would normally move onto the finals, the next ranking participant from that heat will also be invited to attend the finals. In 2021 there was a PPC tie! This will result in one additional student moving on to the finals for a “Top 10”. The full results are below.

Heat 1

  • 1st Place & PPC (tie): Sepidar Yeganeh Farid, Masters student in Educational Psychology, Art during the time of COVID-19  - moves on to the finals
  • 2nd Place: Mahnoor Khan, Masters student in Educational Psychology, The Power of A Story: Highlighting the Experiences of an Immigrant Muslim Family in Canada - moves on to the finals
  • 3rd Place: Isabel Fandino, Masters student in Sociology, The (Unseen) Experiences of International Graduate Students - moves on to the finals

Heat 2

  • 1st Place: Moji Hashemi, PhD student in Engineering - Chemical and Petroleum, Climate Change: The Way Forward - moves on to the finals
  • 2nd Place: YuQing Zhao, Masters student in Engineering - Electrical and Computer, Your Car is Smarter than You, Sometimes: Physical Layer Security Based Relay Selection for Autonomous Vehicles - moves on to the finals
  • 3rd Place: Aylin Habibiyan, PhD student in Engineering - Chemical and Petroleum, A new battery that makes your life easier: Lithium-ion batteries with highly porous and deformable solid-state electrolyte.

  • 1st Place: Vishnu Vasanthan, PhD student in Medicine - Cardiovascular/Respiratory Sciences, Applying Biomaterial Therapies to Enhance Cardiac Healing after a Heart Attack - moves on to the finals
  • 2nd Place: Mannat Bansal, Masters student in Kinesiology, Diversity and Inclusion in Exercise Oncology:  Exploring Barriers to Physical Activity Among Canadian Ethnic Minority Cancer Populations - moves on to the finals
  • 3rd Place: Cecilia Lucio Rodriguez, Masters student Veterinary Medical Sciences, Financial analysis of assisted calving on beef cow-calf operations in Alberta and pain mitigation strategies

  • 1st Place: Ishita Moghe, Masters student in Medicine – Neuroscience, Picked last: Connecting sensorimotor and social difficulties in children with autism - moves on to the finals
  • 2nd Place: Anamika Choudhary, Masters student in Medicine – Neuroscience, Tiny Seizures, Big Consequences: Ketogenic diet’s anti-seizure role in Infantile Spasms - moves on to the finals
  • 3rd Place: Amanjot Kaur, PhD student in Medicine - Medical Sciences, Immunogenetic Landscape of Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT) Donor and Recipients. A Precision Medicine approach to prevent HCT adverse outcomes.
  • Presenter's People's Choice (tie): Chantal Rytz, PhD student in Medicine - Medical Sciences, Estrogen Hormone Therapy in Transgender Women: Opening the Door to Options - moves on to the finals

UCalgary on the national stage

To date, four UCalgary 3MT winners have gone to Canadian Nationals resulting in two national champions and one national People's Choice award winner, making the University of Calgary the most accomplished institution in the history of Canada's 3MT competition.
