3-Day Mandatory Hotel Stay Support Program

Information for international graduate students travelling to Canada

The Government of Canada currently requires international students travelling to Canada to quarantine for up to three nights in a government-approved hotel upon arrival, while waiting for results from mandatory COVID-19 testing. Following this period, students with a negative test result are permitted to travel to their own pre-planned place of quarantine for the remaining 11 days of their mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

The 3-Day Mandatory Hotel Stay Support Program is intended to relieve financial pressure and stress faced by newly arriving international UCalgary graduate students. To learn about this program, please see the following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) below.

  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies is currently working with the Graduate Students’ Association to develop a plan to support newly arriving international graduate students admitted to programs in Fall 2021. We look forward to updating students on these details as soon as they are available.
  • If you have already completed some of your program in Canada, and are now returning to Canada from abroad, you are not eligible. Students who were in Canada pre-pandemic and visiting students are not eligible for this program.
  • If you have already been in touch with the FGS team about this program, and shared your arrival plans, we will follow up with you at least two weeks in advance of your planned arrival date with confirmation of your hotel booking. You do not need to contact us again.
  • If you have not yet contacted FGS about your arrival in Canada, the first step is to complete the university's arrival survey. Once we receive your completed survey, FGS will coordinate a hotel booking for you and we will follow up with you at least two weeks in advance of your planned arrival date with confirmation of your hotel booking.
  1. When will I receive a confirmation from you?

    • We will send you a confirmation email once your hotel is booked. We will make hotel bookings when students are two to three weeks away from their travel departure date. You will receive a confirmation email from us before your travel departure date. Please make sure this confirmation is accessible when you arrive in Canada.
  2. Can I share a room with a travel companion?

    • As per the Government of Canada website, “people who live in the same household may stay in the same hotel room if travelling together.”
    • If you travel with a companion, please note that this program will only cover expenses for UCalgary students’ occupancy. Any travelling companions who are not eligible for the 3-Day Mandatory Hotel Stay Support Program will be required to cover additional occupancy expenses.
  3. My travel companion is a UCalgary grad student. Do we both need to complete the arrival survey?

    • Yes, you must both complete the arrival survey. You can use the survey to share details about your travel companions.
  • The program includes hotels in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Your mandatory hotel stay must take place in your first city of arrival in Canada.
  • Costs that will be covered by this program include accommodation and meals for three days as well as travel from the airport to the hotel.
  1. Are meals included?

    • Yes, the program will cover the standard meal package available from the hotel where you will be staying. Information on the hotel’s menu will be included in the confirmation message that FGS will send to you. Where available, additional food and beverage services that fall outside of the standard meal package will be at the cost of the student.
  2. Can I specify vegetarian or other food preferences?

    • The hotels should be able to accommodate most dietary preferences. You can share your dietary restrictions and preferences in the arrival survey.
  3. Does this program cover the costs from the remaining 11 days of my quarantine?

    • No, this program only covers costs related to the mandatory 3-day hotel stay. The GSA has an emergency bursary available that may support additional costs associated with your quarantine period.
  • See above, “How does the program work?”
  • The university’s arrival survey captures all the required details. If you are planning to travel to Canada soon and you haven’t already done so, please complete the arrival survey
  • For students who have already booked or completed their hotel stay, the GSA has an emergency bursary available that may support costs associated with the hotel stay and/or additional quarantine expenses.
  1. How do I apply for a bursary if I already booked my hotel?

    • Visit the GSA website for more information on the emergency bursary, and for contact information for any questions about applying for a bursary.
  2. Will the bursary cover the costs from the other 11 days of my quarantine?

Both the GSA emergency bursary and the GSA support bursary may provide support for additional quarantine expenses. You can apply for both bursaries.
